Explore how woody biomass can be used in the food and pharma industry
How can we best utilize wood and forest biomass both now and in the future? Can forest tree biomass be used for the production of food and medicine?
Drawing inspiration from the nordic countries, we focus on cascade utilization and the circular economy within the forest industry, leveraging biorefinery and biosolutions.
Discover how forest biomass is transformed into high-value products such as vanillin and fish protein, inspired by leading global companys and nordic researchers.
If you work in the wood industry, ingredients industry or biorefining industry, we hope to inspire you with insights into this emerging field of research and innovation in Denmark.
Biorefinery and cascade utilization
The principle of cascade utilization can be described through a value chain. On the left side, the arrows show how each step in the cascade produces a residual product that can be utilized in the next step. On the right side, the arrows illustrate how the biomass, which consists of biomass building blocks, changes structure and form through the various steps.

Increased forestry focus in Denmark
Denmark has committed to expanding its forested areas by 150,000 hectares of production forest.
This will result in an increased availability of thinning forestry biomass. As the use of woodchips for heating is expected to decline, this development will create a new woody resource.
The conference aims to explore this future opportunity and provide inspiration for innovative ways to utilize this woody resource.
Inspiration from neighboring countries
Norway and Sweden have decades of experience in refining woody biomass into a wide range of advanced products.
Danish forestry research is currently investigating industrial applications. We aim to share inspiration and explore methods for separating woody chemical compounds into novel, innovative, and sustainable solutions, such as feed, energy, food, and potentially pharmaceutical applications
Discussions on the way forward
The discussion panel will offer insights into new combinations of research and innovation for creating high-value products from forestry side streams.
